Govt finalizes Decarbonization Roadmap for Nickel Industry

Jakarta, December 11, 2024 – The Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas), in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, is finalizing a Decarbonization Roadmap for the nickel industry in Indonesia. This initiative aims to ensure environmentally sustainable practices while supporting the industry’s key role in the global supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy technologies.

As part of the preparation for the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), a public consultation forum was held on December 11 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Jakarta. The forum gathered stakeholders from government, industry, finance, and civil society to provide feedback on the draft roadmap.

Deputy Minister for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources of The Ministry of National Development Planning, Vivi Yulaswati, opened the forum.

Indonesia is the world’s largest nickel producer, and the industry plays a significant role in the country’s economy.

However, nickel production also has a considerable environmental impact, particularly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.

The government recognizes the need to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, and the Decarbonization Roadmap aims to achieve this balance.

The roadmap is expected to focus on key strategies for decarbonizing the nickel industry, such as:

  • Improving energy efficiency in nickel production processes.
  • Transitioning from coal to cleaner energy sources, including renewable energy.
  • Encouraging the adoption of new technologies that reduce emissions.

The public consultation forum provided a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to share their perspectives, concerns, and recommendations for the roadmap. The feedback gathered during the forum will be incorporated into the final version of the roadmap, which will then be submitted as an input to the RPJMN 2025-2029.
