Indonesia and UK Forge Strategic Partnership on Critical Minerals

Jakarta, Indonesia – The governments of Indonesia and the United Kingdom have formalized a strategic collaboration in the realm of critical minerals, as evidenced by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday, September 18, at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC). The agreement was inked by Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, and UK Minister of State for the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, Anneliese Dodds.

This MoU establishes a framework for cooperation between the two nations, focusing on the exchange of technology and expertise in the sustainable development of critical minerals. This partnership aims to build on existing agreements between the two countries.

According to Minister Bahlil, the agreement’s core objective is to foster collaboration in mineral technology. “This agreement between the governments of Indonesia and the UK, in essence, is that we will exchange technology in the field of minerals. This is a follow-up to what has been agreed upon between the two countries,” he stated after the signing.

Minister Dodds emphasized the importance of the MoU for the bilateral relationship, highlighting the potential for green growth, job creation, and positive impacts on local communities. “I am very pleased that, as a new government in the UK, we have completed this MoU so that we can work together to ensure the potential for green growth, job potential, and positive potential for the local community. It’s great to be able to work together with the Government of Indonesia,” she said.

The MoU outlines several areas of cooperation, including mineral resources, geology, mining, processing, manufacturing, recycling, modern mining technology, post-mining activities, and environmental rehabilitation. The agreement is designed to facilitate the exchange of technical knowledge, advice, skills, and expertise regarding sustainable critical minerals practices. Furthermore, it seeks to mitigate environmental and social risks associated with mining operations.

The agreement is intended to serve as a basis for future collaborative projects. It supports mutual commitments, investments, job creation, and ensuring benefits for communities. The focus on sustainable practices is a key aspect of this partnership, acknowledging the environmental and social dimensions of the mining industry.
