Indonesia to Host Workshop on Decarbonizing Nickel and Aluminum Industries

Jakarta, Indonesia – A workshop aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of nickel and aluminum industries is scheduled for January 14, 2025 in Jakarta. Hosted by the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), the workshop will focus on enhancing emissions transparency in the supply chain.

The event comes in response to growing global pressure from mandatory regulations and voluntary corporate actions to address climate impacts beyond a company’s direct operations, with a particular emphasis on supply chain emissions. These emissions account for 60% of global carbon emissions, making supply chain decarbonization a critical step towards achieving net zero targets. More than 7,000 companies have already set Science-Based Targets, and new trade-related climate policies, such as the EU Battery Regulation and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), are further driving the need for supply chain emission transparency.

Voluntary corporate demand presents a significant opportunity to drive green industrial growth, exemplified by the First Movers Coalition commitments representing over $16 billion in clean annual demand by 2030. However, improved emissions data is necessary to unlock this potential, with 85% of companies citing it as the most significant barrier to green procurement. Emissions transparency forms the basis for low-emissions supply agreements, enabling suppliers to secure funding for cleaner technologies.

“As a key producer of metals such as nickel and bauxite, Indonesia is vital to global supply chains,” stated the workshop invitation. This presents a chance for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet rising green demand and address international market emissions data requirements. The workshop aims to bring together policymakers, NGOs, researchers, industry associations, and financiers involved in Indonesia’s nickel and aluminum supply chains to advance best practices in emissions accounting.

The workshop’s objectives include enhancing understanding of the role of emission transparency in driving green industry growth, fostering alignment of carbon accounting standards with global practices, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Participants will engage in hands-on training and facilitated discussions to explore collaborative opportunities. Additionally, attendees will receive a certificate of completion, acknowledging their commitment to sustainable practices.

Key sessions include:

  • Demystifying Methodologies for Carbon Accounting
  • Uncovering Hotspots by Emissions Inventory Analysis
  • Mastering Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculations
  • Panel discussions will explore how Indonesia can establish key priorities and foster collaborative efforts to accelerate emissions transparency

The event will engage approximately 50 attendees and run from 9:00 to 16:00 WIB. Participants are expected to include representatives from:

  • Regional Agencies: ASEAN Centre for Energy and ASEAN Secretariat
  • Indonesian Government Ministries/Agencies: Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), and Ministry of Industry
  • Private Sector/Industry Associations: Including battery, nickel, and aluminum private entities such as PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park and PT Adaro Minerals
  • Financiers: Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank, and other regional commercial banks
  • Think Tanks/Research/Service Providers: Such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and World Resources Institute (WRI)

The workshop is a significant effort to support green industrial growth, enhance Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain, and achieve sustainability goals by emphasizing emissions transparency and collaborative strategies. RMI is leveraging its expertise in global supply chains, GHG accounting, and industrial decarbonization to host the workshop.
