PT Timah Advances Green Initiatives for a Sustainable Future

Pangkalpinang, October 24, 2024 — PT Timah continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability through various conservation and management programs across all its operational areas. With its business directly impacting natural ecosystems, the company is dedicated to mitigating environmental risks by implementing comprehensive environmental monitoring and climate change mitigation efforts.

PT Timah’s environmental management strategy includes monitoring air and water quality, conserving biodiversity, and adopting responsible production practices to minimize waste and achieve decarbonization. These efforts extend to land and marine reclamation, post-mining rehabilitation, and integrated biodiversity conservation, all aimed at promoting eco-friendly operations and supporting long-term sustainability goals.

“By integrating environmental conservation into our operations, we aim to balance economic growth with environmental preservation, supporting both our business sustainability and the well-being of the local community,” stated PT Timah’s Corporate Communications Department Head, Anggi Siahaan.

In its land and marine reclamation efforts, PT Timah has focused on revegetation and reforestation in Bangka Belitung and the Riau Islands. Marine reclamation includes initiatives such as creating artificial reefs, restocking cuttlefish, installing fish shelters, mangrove planting, and coral transplantation. These activities aim to restore ecosystems and safeguard biodiversity in the areas surrounding the company’s operations.

Extreme climate change poses a significant challenge to PT Timah’s operations, prompting the company to adopt decarbonization measures. These include energy efficiency programs, carbon emission reduction strategies, and environmentally responsible mining practices. The company is also investing in research and development of green technologies to support its goal of reducing carbon emissions.

Key initiatives include monitoring air emissions, optimizing biodiesel use, and transitioning to low-emission energy sources. PT Timah has implemented solar photovoltaic systems at its Mentok smelter, generating up to 3 MW of power. The company is also working toward converting its mining equipment from fossil fuels to electric power, enhancing both environmental and operational efficiency.

“Maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental preservation is crucial for our sustainability. PT Timah continues to raise its operational standards to ensure a positive impact on the environment and society,” added Siahaan.

In addition to reducing its environmental footprint, PT Timah’s initiatives align with global sustainability objectives, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company continues to invest in renewable energy projects and adopt green technologies, demonstrating its long-term commitment to environmental stewardship.

These initiatives position PT Timah as a leading force in sustainable mining, ensuring that its operations contribute positively to the environment and the communities where it operates.
