PT Vale Indonesia Pioneers Low-Carbon Initiative with Refurbished Trucks

Sorowako, January 21, 2025 – PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale), a part of the MIND ID Group, has launched its Zero Hour Refurbished Truck program, marking a significant step towards a national low-carbon agenda. The initiative involves the complete refurbishment of two 100-ton trucks, a CAT 777 and a Komatsu HD 785, at the Mobile Equipment Maintenance (MEM) area.

The program, in collaboration with PT Trakindo Utama and PT United Tractors, demonstrates PT Vale’s commitment to operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. These trucks, previously deemed beyond their 150,000-hour lifespan, were rebuilt in Balikpapan after being transported from Sorowako in September 2024.

The rebuild process has restored the trucks to like-new condition with zero operating hours.

This approach not only ensures optimal performance but also significantly reduces environmental impact, achieving up to 30% reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to 174 tons of carbon savings per unit, the company said in the statement.

This project also supports the national agenda by increasing the use of domestically produced goods, with a 20% increase in the local content (TKDN).

“We hope that the sustainability efforts through this truck rebuilding initiative will become more widely recognized, especially since PT Vale, as an IUPK holder, is among the first in the mining sector to implement this initiative, given its significant impact on People, Planet, and Profit (3P),” said Sadewo, Head of Supply Chain Management at PT Vale Indonesia.

This initiative also addresses the challenges of procuring new heavy equipment, which involves high costs and long delivery times.

By rebuilding, the company reuses existing assets, avoiding the need to purchase new units, thus contributing to cost efficiencies.

Abu Ashar, Chief Operation and Infrastructure Officer at PT Vale, emphasized that this is a smart step in meeting operational needs and promoting sustainability by extending the lifespan of heavy equipment, reducing the carbon footprint and reflecting their care for both the environment and resource efficiency.

“This initiative has many benefits, not only in terms of cost efficiency but also in utilizing used items that still have value, which would otherwise be wasted. Of course, there is a sense of pride; previously, old items would typically be scrapped, but now that’s no longer the case. Therefore, I hope this breakthrough can be continued,”he said.

PT Trakindo Utama is also proud to participate in this project, aligning with their goal of zero waste and reduced carbon emissions, according to Manager Muhammad Hisyam.

Operators have also expressed enthusiasm for the program.

Akbar Ali and Yulianus Tira Tangaran, two operators who have used the refurbished trucks, noted that they felt like they were operating new equipment. Yulianus also expressed his gratitude to PT Vale and PT Trakindo for the improved comfort. This positive response further highlights the benefits of this program.
